In RARE PLUS, Dionisios Fragias presents two simultaneous exhibitions: COLORSPACE/EMBEDDED. COLORSPACE is a series of poly-chromed urethane and stainless steel sculptures that are three-dimensional embodiments of how computer programs “view” and interpret color range or gamut. This type of digital technology increasingly helps artists fabricate their work, which often can go from conception to completion via computerized milling without being touched by human hands. Commenting on this relatively new tendency, Fragias spins the concept by using aspects of technology (the tools) as art, paradoxically fabricating the actual artwork via purely traditional methods.
EMBEDDED is a series of stream-of-consciousness oil paintings fused into freestanding walls that explore the links between cognition and human nature. The paintings are rendered in a photo-realistic style with interacting abstracted components snaking through them. Some of the abstract elements are duplicated on and wrap around the wall surfaces. This series is Fragias’ attempt to subvert the physicality of painting and its traditional method of installation by partially turning them on their heads: opting to bring “gesture” as the overriding bridge between artist and viewer, rather than image content, while also connecting painting with architecture.
