The artists in “From a Distance” share a minimal aesthetic and interest in found, rudimentary and mundane materials. Their artistic strategies do not position artifacts as objects, but rather create cognitive structures via temporal, physical or artistic displacements. As such, the works are fragile (and at times ephemeral) in their physicality, apprehension and circulation.

“From a Distance” reflects the hybridity of linguistic and artistic structures, merging the narrative, the mnemonic and the performative. Nodding to the conceptual aesthetics of Modern legacy and forms (collage, ready-made and modernist abstraction), the works juxtapose language and visuality, dissolutions and materializations, collapse and stability. In reconsidering the modernist legacy, the works in “From a Distance” evoke what Walead Beshty describes as “indeterminate, temporary, disposable, marginal spaces,” where memories and displacements come to represent humble acts of resistance. Not merely physical, space becomes temporal, existing through alterations and souvenirs. History is an accumulation of stories, subjective and manipulated. “From a Distance” fades away during the course of the exhibition. As such, the exhibition becomes a disappearing experience. – Vincent Honoré
