Little Cakes comes full circle with a solo show by artist Julian Gatto who participated in our inaugural show last fall. Again, Julian organically creates an atmosphere to warm the heart with his beautiful drawings and prints as well as his irregular but cozy wood structures.
Julian is heavily inspired by nature, human ingenuity, and human resourcefulness. His installation includes found wood structures that hold up his framed drawings, making the frames part of the building blocks of his miniature world. Scattered, hidden, and housed within his microcosm are pieces of wood wrapped in cloth and small plants. They both bring warmth and a sense of domesticity which are ideas and emotions which thread through much of Julian’s work.
His new drawings and prints use colors more vibrant than in the past. By mainly working in gouache, it has led Julian to explore deeper into color and contrasting hues and tones. Human figures also inhabit his drawings more frequently. He attributes this to his wish that his fantastical landscapes become more of a reality or potential to be real to the viewer than mere fairytale or dream.
