Peer Gallery is pleased to present two bodies of work by American photographer, Christopher Rauschenberg.

In Rephotographing Atget, Mr. Rauschenberg has revisited the Paris of the famed French photographer, Eugène Atget, retracing his steps and photographing 500 sites that M. Atget captured on film nearly a century earlier. With remarkable grace and integrity, Rauschenberg’s rephotographic images portray a city hauntingly similar in appearance and character to that of his predecessor’s. What began as an homage to a revered artist, evolved into an inspired and independent photographic study. Guided by Atget’s straightforward, modernist sensibility, Rauschenberg photographed hundreds of additional scenes that invoked, in him, the spirit of Atget. These images serve as poetic testimony to the persistence of this iconic Paris, which is revealed to be alive and well, moving seamlessly into the contemporary world. The exhibition features a selection of these works, some of which have been previously shown at the International Center for Photography, and the George Eastman House.

Rauschenberg’s ongoing body of color work, Daily Life, comes from the flux and beauty of day-to-day experiences. Using a digital camera that he carries in his pocket at all times, he is able to capture small moments that would otherwise have slipped by him. Rauschenberg describes these images as “photographs made while just living and being.” The work reveals a lighthearted charm in the world around us that is characterized by an endearing balance of humble optimism, and absurd humor.
