In his work, Tom McGrath substantially rethinks the genre of landscape painting. He does not idealize the pastoral landscape, which is misaligned with present attitudes toward land use, but takes a far more objective look. He accepts changes, setting the stage of the modern landscape so that its cracks and fissures are not only represented but are among its key distinguishing features. In his new work, McGrath continues his exploration of the landscape but shifts from direct encounters to staged aerial views, day to night, natural light to artificial illumination, and East Coast suburbia to Southern California urban views.
