Kent Gallery is pleased to present Butterfly Girls, new works on paper by Mike Cockrill. Butterfly Girls continues Cockrill’s look into the fantasy laden world of children. Cockrill explores the transition between the innocence of youth and the emotionally charged years of adolescence. Influenced by Children’s books and nostalgia the works are sweetly decorative yet cunningly profane. The title of the new works suggests the transformative stage of the Butterfly as well as making a veiled reference to Vladimir Nabokov, who was an enthusiastic Lepidopterist, and best known for the notorious novel, Lolita.

In addition Kent Gallery will be showing another series of works by Cockrill entitled Stations of the Cross These works also deal with transformation and metamorphosis. In the series of 14 works on paper the Jesus figure is condemned as a woman, falls the first time as a boy, then becomes an African-American girl, then is stripped and crucified as a woman, dies as a black athlete, and is carried away as a dead soldier
