In New Work, Ruby furthers his investigations of memory and embodiment through techniques that push accepted forms to their limits. Two large works on paper, Prime Mover 1 & 2, moodily consider the complexities of cultural and personal autonomy. Biomorphic structures – both geometric and organic – connect fields of black spray-paint to a underlay of web-like shapes, while images of a knife, a ceramic plate, tears and drips remain discrete, unable to be readily incorporated into a body or system.
Sterling Ruby was born in Bittburg, Germany in 1972. He holds a BFA from The Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena. He has exhibited recently at Marc Foxx, Los Angeles (2005) and Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, New York (2004); He is also currently exhibiting at the Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst, Amserdam; and will participate in a two person show at Guild and Greyshkul, New York next month. Ruby lives and works in Los Angeles.
