In Ryan Mrozowski’s paintings strange and mysterious events appear to be in progress. Crowds of a few or many gather around some central activity. In “Presentation,” a crowd forms beneath the dark edges of a dimly lit row of buildings to bear witness to a violinist, a pianist, a group of choral singers, and men standing atop a piano dressed in what could be lab coats, who have put down their scores to observe a central suited figure looking over his shoulder at a flock of birds descending toward him. Two camera men record the events.Toward the outer edge of the onlookers the scene dims ominously. In another painting, “Untitled (Plane Crash),” a group of businessmen are seated around a conference table upon which an airplane has just crash landed, paper reports still neatly awaiting their recipients. And in another, “The Conditions of Our Return,” figures seated on a hillside overlook what appear to be white-garbed ‘spiritual’ men causing blue figures to arise from open caskets.
