Plane Space is delighted to present The Hypnotism, Matt Bollinger’s New York debut. This exhibition of new oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings will open Saturday, January 5th, and be on view through Sunday, February 10th. A reception for the artist will be held Saturday evening, January 5th, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Bollinger scripts and shoots video footage as source material for his paintings and works on paper. The resulting images – cropped and taken from the context of a larger narrative -– maintain the characteristics of their cinematic construction. The translation of these scenes to oil, watercolor and graphite, moreover, leave the viewer with voyeuristic snap shots. Sexually charged, the spaces are layered with figures and fixtures within a bohemian lifestyle. Bollinger’s vibrant palette in the paintings and watercolors seem to reflect the orgiastic abandon of the subjects, while the raw strokes of the drawings – studies, along with watercolors, for the oils – emphasize a freedom, if not a rebellion against restriction.
Born in Independence, Missouri, Bollinger completed his B.F.A. in Painting and Creative Writing at the Kansas City Art Institute in 2003. In the summer of 2002, Bollinger attended the Yale University Norfolk Summer Program. He recently received his M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design. He has exhibited work in Kansas City, Philadelphia, and Providence.
