Fake Estate is proud to present Visor Visitor, new work by critically acclaimed, London-based artist Caroline Achaintre. The show marks Achaintre’s first solo exhibition in the United States.
Caroline Achaintre’s approach explores her interests in subjects as diverse as tribal masks, expressionist painting, musical theory and the craft tradition. Her images capture the fleeting, delicate moments between dream states and lucidity; between the abstract and the figurative. Working primarily in an unconventional medium, the hooked wool rug, Achaintre brings the traditionally utilitarian textiles used in such pieces off the horizontal plane of the floor and onto the vertical, perpendicular realm of the gallery wall where weight and gravity contribute to expressing the physicality of each piece. From afar Achaintre’s hooked rugs read as abstract paintings yet, upon closer and further examination, one can detect the soft, sculptural wool tentacles of each work.
With Visor Visitor, Achaintre presents a duo of rugs, the first of which, Visor, is a distorted mask adorned with elaborate geometric patterns. Visitor, the second, more painterly piece, acts as the perceived vision of what the dislocated viewer might encounter if he or she were wearing such a mask or encountered such a creature. These works seek to impress a sort of surrealist relationship, transporting the viewer into a psychedelic world, perhaps one as close to each of us as the inside of our eyelids.
Caroline Achaintre was born in France. She was raised in Germany. Currently, she lives and works in London. In 2003 she graduated from Goldsmiths College with an MA in Fine Art. Since that time Achaintre has had solo shows at Blow de la Barra and The Showroom in London and at Mirko Mayer Galerie in Cologne, Germany. Achaintre has also participated in various group shows in New York, London, Shanghai and Paris.
