Lehmann Maupin Gallery, 540 W 26th Street is pleased to present a two-person exhibition of new work by Berlin-based artists Tobias Buche and Jonas Lipps. This will be the artists’ first exhibition at the gallery.

Tobias Buche (b. 1978, Berlin, Germany) creates rough overworked sculptures comprised of collaged imagery meticulously mined from his personal archive. These collected photos and drawings – both found and created by the artist – link associations between the cultural landscape, media, and personal memories. Presented as a series of sculptures on particleboard, his work asks the viewer to navigate the space and investigate one’s own relationship to the groupings. The Kunstverein Braunschweig recently held a solo exhibition of Buche’s work, which is currently on view in “Unmonumental” at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York. Selected group exhibitions include; “Conditions of Display”, The Moore Space, Miami, FL; “Construction Time Again,” Lisson Gallery, London (all 2007). “Street: Behind The Cliché,” Witte de With, Rotterdam; “4th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art”, Berlin; “Trial Balloons”, MUSAC, León (all 2006). Buche recently curated “The Gone Wait” at Gagos ian Gallery, Berlin.

Jonas Lipps (b. 1979, Freiburg, Germany) creates introspective spaces using watercolor, drawings, and weathered found papers. The erratic nature of the materials transforms the space and object-hood of the deliberately small pages. The traces of dried pigment, overworked paper, and steady lines over the found imagery ultimately evolve into a space from Lipps own subconscious. Landscapes, portraiture, abstraction, color theory and collage are all referenced and simultaneously cancel each other out. In this way, Lipps presents a unique space which is both idyllic and convoluted, and like Buche asks viewers to question their own perceptions. This is Lipps first exhibition in the United States. Selected Group Exhibitions include “Kitty Kraus, Jonas Lipps, Blinky Palermo” Allsopp Contemporary, London; “The harder you Look”, Eleni Koroneou Gallery, Athens (both 2007); “The Gone Wait,” (curated by Tobias Buche), Gagosian Gallery, Berlin.
