Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, Sakai’s wood constructions based on geometric shapes, articulated objects that were structured as a continuous embodiment of space and meaning. In recent years, he began working with natural stone, a new material for his vocabulary. After a period of technical experimentation, Sakai discovered a process of construction similar to how he used wood.

The wood sculptures featured in this show may be seen as three-dimensional drawings that underscore a construction process that explores the relationship between stone and wood; with particular attention to engineering, weight distribution and balance in stone.

While he places his work permanently outdoors against the destructive forces of nature as in his installations in the desolate California desert, Sakai has made sculptures similar to these installations specifically for display in this gallery setting.

Katsuhisa Sakai was born in Japan, he received a BFA from Musashino Art College in Tokyo and a MFA from Yale University, School of Art. Sakai’s work includes experimental film, video, drawings and sculpture, shown in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Tokyo.
