In her current series of work, Lindsay Walt continues to draw inspiration from the luminous glazes of ceramics particularly the indelible blue of Wedgwood jasper ware. Painting on wood panels of various sizes, with layers of rich color washes she creates an aqueous field that alludes to water, sky or dreamscape. Overlaid in a delicate hand are intricate motifs in black and white derived from Islamic miniatures, calligraphy, natural organic forms, and ornament, suggesting a universal spiritual symbology. There is a recurring circular motif in her paintings that reminds one of Native American Dream Catchers woven from delicate threads and natural materials that function as a portal to the dream world. Lindsay Walt’s new paintings with their lovely arabesques and blue fields, are seductive on first sight and yet reward the viewer with long meditative viewing as they open a portal to the spiritual world.

Lindsay Walt has said of her paintings: ” These paintings describe an amorphous location, a world without horizon where land and sea merge: or, a perceptual dislocation between where one thing begins and another ends. .... a state of weightlessness: floating, flying, and most particularly, dreaming, free from the constraints of gravity. “

Lindsay Walt received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design, and her MFA from The Art Institute of Chicago. Additionally she studied at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She has exhibited in NY and around the US and been the recipient of a Mac Dowell Fellowship. Her paintings are in many prominent private and public collections including; Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, Ct., Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art, Gainesville, Fl., Chase Manhattan Bank, Progressive Insurance Co., Prudential Insurance Co., and Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT. among others.
