Michael Steinberg Fine Art presents a new series of paintings by New York-based artist Les Joynes. Painted with rich, opulent colors, Joynes’ works weave references to mythical environments and creatures such as birds, totems and feathers that are symbolic of transcendent environments he identifies as middleworlds.
For Joynes painting enables encounters with an inner world that comes to life in the creation and viewing of a work of art. Existing at the edge of consciousness and form this middle world is complex, multi-layered and fluid.
Created in Berlin and New York Joynes’ paintings incorporate an uncompromisingly individual approach to the history of painting. The immediacy of brushstroke is used to excavate form, texture, and color. Joynes layers, superimposes and buries images and forms until their reading tensely peers towards abstraction.
