ARTCAT

Yunsook Park

Gallery 456
456 Broadway, 3rd Floor, 212-431-9740
Soho
February 25 - March 28, 2008
Reception: Friday, February 29, 6 - 8 PM

Yunsook Park recycles often overlooked everyday images and objects in her painting. Such mundane elements are discovered and transformed not to overthrow the act of creation but to reinstate painting as a means of contemplation and an artist as a pure creator in the commercially cultivated art environment.

Park has created several bodies of works that reflect her interest in the relations between word and painting and contain questions about the meaning of painting and the role of the artists. The bold and yet intricate usage of word into painting stands out as her visual methods, often bringing a sense of wit when it comes to how the actual piece has been executed.

The exhibit will include her continued series of Good Luck Project that configures lucky numbers and words by collaging bits of New York lottery instant game tickets, the monthly paintings titled BEST IF bearing the self-expiring date on the very day of execution and Repeated Definition-01 that inscribes the phrase “NOT FOR INDIVIDUAL SALE” on the diptychs and triptychs Park has purchased on e-Bay.

Visually pleasing and meaningfully questioning, the paintings by Yunsook Park are diligent, meticulous, repetitive and persistent.
