DAVID F. GIESE Recent Excavations from the Villa Bitricci: Northern Influences- Inspirations From Germany and the Netherlands, Attributed to Jan Gossaert called Mabuse – 2004 concrete, paint, flotage, mixed media, 44×52 x 8.5 inches (111.76×132.08×21.59 cm)

David F. Giese – Giese’s works are massive concrete laminated and mold-formed depictions of ruins from the fictitious “Villa Bitricci” an imaginary site where the artifacts were supposedly found. These “ruins” combine various period architectural detailing in humorous ways to represent the “rise and fall of taste” in design history.

WILLIAM NICHOLS Swift Water Embankment – 2004 oil on linen 60×88 inches (152.4×223.52 cm)

William Nichols – The large scale landscape paintings by William Nichols represent a view of a single small stream and adjacent pond at varying seasons and times of day over the course of one year.

UNJU LEE 365 Days – Fall – 2005 cardboard 4×6 x 2 feet (1.22×1.83 x .61 meter)

Unju Lee – Unju Lee’s extravagant cardboard fabrications and thick, wall-mounted bronze slabs are meditations on surface, texture and transformation. Large upright panels exhibit an amalgamation of forms and shapes in a flowing grid-like pattern. Square panels are almost mystical abstractions using the distressed and tormented cardboard like a painter uses pigment. The bronze slabs both emulate the cardboard and contrast with it presenting a more formalized, static form for the simple, almost iconic shapes they hold in abeyance.

MARILYNN GELFMAN Marib 1 – 1997 color photograph 16×11 inches (40.64×27.94 cm)

Marilynn Gelfman – For most of 14 centuries, Yemen was a dominant power on the Saudi Arabian Peninsula. Internecine strife and tribal politics yielded periods of Ottoman rule, British occupation and in the 1970s, two Yemens (San’a and Aden). In May 1990 the Republic of Yemen was declared with “San’a as political capital and Aden as economic capital.” Yemen is an amalgam of the complexities of the biblical East, Islam, tribal ancientness and relentlessly restive politics. It is the site of one of the earliest written alphabets (South Arabian). In 1992 Ms. Gelfman visited Yemen and in 1997 returned, determined to experience something more of this compelling culture and to photograph it.

PETER MYMA Train and Bridge – 1997 ilfochrome 16×20 inches (40.64×50.8 cm)

Peter Myma – Rendered in the light and shadow of the world around us, these lyrical landscapes are Peter Myma’s visual metaphor for the pathos of life. With an emphasis on clarity and presence, the analog Ilfochrome prints from an 8×10 view camera are felt as much as seen. They show a world apart from headlines and hyperbole, where the rhythm of existence is hidden in plain sight.

BURLEIGH KRONQUIST Carpe Diem #11 – 2004 tape, oil on polaroid 3.5×4.25 inches (8.89×11.43 cm)

Burleigh Kronquist – Carpe Diem Series

This series of oil paintings on Polaroids juxtaposes vertical stripes and layers of vivid color to create a sort of abstract snapshot of the moment that is suddenly and immediately present.
