Matt Magee’s new abstract paintings were created during his recent residency at the Albers Foundation. In these new works Magee continues the codification of form in both his sculpture and paintings. In his abstractions one can examine the artist’s finely executed style as he documents natural matter including shells, rocks, coral, mountains, buttes and peaks. His connection to geology is evident.

The viewer can also distinguish unnatural shapes in the way Mr. Magee manipulates his imagery. Utilizing cut-up plastic bottles, Magee incorporates the same systematically structured shapes tied together with wire that read more like hieroglyphics, another theme within his work. While there is an interplay of shape and images, there is also a grammar, a lexicon, a voice. Magee constantly reminds us that we both create shape, and in turn are created by shape, formed by image as we attempt to confront what we have before us at any given time.

Matt Magee received his MFA from Pratt in New York City, and received his BA in art history from Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas. Matt has also been the recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant, a NY State Foundation for the Arts Grant and a Board of Trustees Award from Silvernine Arts Center.
