Larissa Goldston Gallery is pleased to present World Go One Way, People Another, Amy Vogel’s first solo exhibition in New York. The exhibition will be on view from February 29th through March 29th. There will be an opening reception for the artist on February 29th from 6 to 8pm.

In order to explore themes of solitude and desire, Amy Vogel draws on the rural landscape of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for her recent work. Vogel’s sculpture installation of twenty cast zinc logs evokes the physical landscape of the region and recalls the centrality of logging to the local economy in previous decades. This reminder of past prosperity underscores the presence of the dilapidated, yet surprisingly bucolic trailer homes that appear in her paintings. These works portray the secluded backwoods dotted with the rusticated dwellings – the antithesis to the chaos of urban life. Vogel highlights the irony of these quintessential residences within the context of the environment. “Designed for the free spirit, to pick up and go somewhere, anywhere, anytime, the trailer homes are situated in the woods, seeming to go nowhere”, rooted to the ground as firmly as the surrounding trees. It is this stasis that creates the paradox of the place, “a place that is both somewhere to escape to and from.”

Executed on a self-invented fresco-like surface, her two dimensional works incorporate both painting and drawing. She notes that the two mediums function differently, “the actual pencil drawings add specificity…a narrative.” The graphite additions of ropes and traps to Vogel’s otherwise picturesque scenes create an ambiguous space that questions perceptions of liberation and entrapment.
