Subdivision is pleased to present Dreamer of Pictures, an exhibition of new paintings and drawings by Haejae Lee, Hannah Kasper, Deborah Pohl, and René Smith. The four artists present different perspectives on our relationship with the interior spaces that we inhabit, dream about, and desire.
Haejae Lee’s romantically rendered houses of the American West are filtered through her experience of immigrating to the U.S. as a teenager. For Lee these houses are a physical manifestation of the longing for a perfect and absolute home – they simultaneously evoke a personal space of comfort and a feeling of emptiness and isolation. Hannah Kasper’s inventive, dream-like interiors create a stage upon which viewers can project their own narratives.
Deborah Pohl addresses our desire for the sumptuous interiors of catalogues as a space of beauty and a marker of affluence. Her precise drawings are often marred by the dark seam of the catalogue binding – a mark that points to the artificiality of the advertising world and the physicality of the drawing itself. René Smith’s pastel drawings are meticulous reinterpretations of past moments as viewed through snapshots from the sixties and seventies. These images reflect the interiority inherent in the personal space of memory and the intimacy and nostalgia signified by the domestic spaces of family photographs.
All four artists create personal, evocative works that present familiar images in inventive ways and publicly investigate the private world of interiors.
