ART 101 is privileged to welcome back Patrick Whalen and his new exhibition, “CHAIRS” opening on March 21. The opening reception will take place on March 20, from 6 to 9 pm.

Whalen has had a number of shows in California; “Needles and Pins” at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco in 1998 and “Toward the New Millenium” at the Berkeley Art Museum, 1997, among them. He was in the “Outer Boroughs” exhibit at White Columns, NYC in 1999 and “The Skin Game” at Smack Mellon Studios in Brooklyn in 2000. His solo exhibition “Ghosts and Veils” was in 2005 at ART 101.

The drawings and paintings of chairs are surprisingly expressive.

“When I make drawings I find myself drawn to certain forms, ideas I tend to follow where they lead me. The chairs struck me as essential shapes, elegant in their simplicity. Chairs are an invitation, offering a place to rest and contemplate. Designed for human habitation, on their own they also have an air of absence. As I drew more and more of these chairs, I thought. “Where are the people?” PW ‘08

On Saturday March 29, ART 101 will be open until 11 pm as part of the Williamsburg Gallery Association AFTER HOURS celebration of Armory Week.

On Friday April 11, there will be another reception at ART 101 and Patrick Whalen will be present from 7 to 9 pm.
