New work by the Supporting Women Artists Project artists-in-residence
Claire Brassil, Fran Holstrom, Katrina Jeffries, Sabrina Lee, Liz Lessner, Rachel Murawski, and Elizabeth Schuppe
The Supporting Women Artists Project (SWAP) presents Side by Side, an exhibition featuring the work of seven SWAP artists-in-residence, past and present. SWAP is a non-profit organization that offers free studio space to emerging women artists who mentor or teach art to public school girls in New York City. Now in its second year, SWAP currently provides studio space for five artists and art instruction to over 180 girls. Side by Side is the first gallery exhibition solely featuring the work of SWAP artists-in-residence.
From issues of identity and allegorical narratives to materials-based exploration, the diverse work in this exhibition highlights the broad range of interests and working methodologies employed by the SWAP artists. The work culls inspiration from the history of abstract painting, functional and material metamorphosis, the mutation of history and memories, and the flux of personal identity.
