Deborah V. Spiroff’s gestural abstractions engage the body. Her person-size canvases reveal an animation of color, light and atmosphere reflecting a rigorous involvement of her gesture with the canvas. Spiroff’s interest in light is inspired by her fascination with the effects of stained glass. She is also interested in exploring various rhythms allowed by her ambidextrous approach-Spiroff paints with both hands simultaneously. Her work evokes a sense of conflict between the elements of violence and beauty.
Spiroff received an MFA from Pratt Institute in painting in 2005 and a BFA in fashion design from Parsons in 1992 and attended Yale University’s graduate program in theatrical design. In 1998, she had a solo exhibition in Sofia, Bulgaria. Her work has appeared in numerous group exhibitions in Brooklyn, including “Color Concept” in 2006 at Galeria Janet Kurnatowski. This is her first solo exhibition with the gallery.
