Kouros Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of major new paintings in combined media by Bruce Dorfman. Entitled Propellor, the show is informed by the artist’s ongoing interest in visual invocations of multiple moments of intimacies and places in time.

The exhibition is Dorfman’s forty-fourth one-person show during the past five decades throughout the U.S. and abroad. Nine large scale combined media paintings and 11 combined media works under glass, created largely between 2007 and 2008, will be displayed throughout both floors of Kouros Gallery.

Dorfman’s art has received extensive coverage in a wide range of periodicals, catalogues and monographs worldwide. Writing about the present exhibition, art critic Phyllis Braff states, “As a title for an important Bruce Dorfman piece, and for his current exhibition, Propellor has just the right resonance for art that thrusts beyond the rectangular format . . . The title also tends to underscore the exuberant energy generated by much of the artist’s recent work. This vigor builds on Dorfman’s well established accomplishments in orchestrating tone and form . . .” Ms. Braff goes on to state, “What seems additionally stimulating and relevant to current art directions is the artist’s interest in gritty reality, iconoclastic treatments of space, and in the expressionistic possibilities of interactive reflections. The works seem to suggest a kind of open-ended energy and dialogue that feels right for today’s sensibilities.”*

Dorfman’s work is included in many museums and important collections internationally. He is the recipient of numerous awards including, most recently for 2007-08, a major grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. He has also received awards from the Rockefeller Foundation; the Butler Institute of American Art; New York State Council on the Arts; Fulbright Fellowship, and many others.

An esteemed teacher at the Art Students League of New York since 1964, Dorfman has also taught at The New School, Syracuse University, Norton Museum of Art, Everson Museum, and others. He has held the positions of guest artist and lecturer at museums and cultural institutions in Venezuela, Portugal and France.
