For this exhibition Daniel Zeller continues to develop his intricate works on paper. The imagery borrows from topographical maps, satellite images, anatomical and schematic diagrams—two dimensional translations of the three dimensional world—but Zeller’s worlds are entirely invented intuitive responses to the parallels and contradictions inherent in the variety of ways that we view the world. “In a sense the drawings become an act of digestion and regurgitation; reconfiguration driven by information overload.” (Zeller) His titles are indicative of his concerns as well as his process; examples include Maladaptive Entanglement, Systemic Acquisition, Connective Entrapment, Implemented Cohesion, and Invasive Seclusion.

Zeller’s process is dynamic and direct. It is a fluid series of spontaneous choices governed by self-imposed rules and conditions. The main rule is to always respect what has already been put on the page. Other conditions might dictate how color is used or topography rendered. These rules are flexible and serve to mediate and mold what might otherwise result in chaos. Tension between spontaneity and predictability is central to the process. The goal is to discover new vocabulary and new rules that can be incorporated, thus allowing the cycle to expand and evolve. The new works reveal an expanded color palette and a deepened three-dimensional, sculptural aspect.
