New paintings by Judy Ledgerwood.
Ledgerwood’s wide exhibition history includes numerous shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, The Renaissance Society in Chicago and, most recently, Ugly Beauty at 1301 PE in Los Angeles in 2004.
This exhibition presents eight new paintings in which Ledgerwood continues to explore formal issues of light, color and structure with audacity. Ledgerwood’s delectable palette of turquoises, luminous reds, lemon yellows, fluorescent pinks and metallic golds recalls the exuberant, fluctuating light of spring. Optically rich and rhythmic, the artist’s bold patterns operate in juxtaposition to the fragility of the viewing experience. Ledgerwood’s calligraphic loops and strips of paint saturate the canvas gracefully, and ultimately expose us to the sweeping, muscular strokes used to create them.
