Broadway Gallery is pleased to announce Soft Logic, a group exhibition featuring the painting of four emerging abstract painters: Kimberly Brickley, Sarah Duke, Yui Kugimiya, and Gillian Sneed. Though each artist is unique in her style and approach, these four artists share a vision that finds expression through a formal idiom that investigates the relationship between structure and organicism.
Slated to receive her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009, Kimberly Brickley’s multimedia abstractions explore the notion of landscape. Influenced by topographical maps, she in interested in nature, decay, and biological phenomena.
A recent Pratt Institute MFA graduate, Sarah Duke’s delicately rendered oils depict vibrant and enigmatic amorphous forms that are the result of observation of disparate objects being forced together. Her paintings represent her attempt to reconcile the contours of these shapes.
A recent Yale MFA graduate, Yui Kugimiya considers her paintings as an autobiographical recording medium. By using non-traditional materials in conjunction with oil paint, she aims at contrasting the otherness or artificiality of materials.
Gillian Sneed is an artist and writer based in New York. Her paintings exploit the structure of the grid to draw attention to its imperfection. Her work explores the power of color through layering, transparency, and color juxtapositioning.
In concert, these works indicate exciting directions in new painting in terms of their materiality, and approach to color and media. Softening the hard edges of formalism, these works favor approaches that are playful and instinctive.
