ATM Gallery is pleased to announce a two – person exhibition with Brooklyn based artists Benjamin Butler and Anne Eastman.
Benjamin Butler presents three paintings from 2008 entitled “Dark Tree”, “Dark Tree (Blue, Violet, Black)”, and “Leafless Trees”. These paintings are, in part, as literal as the titles suggest, but they also reflect the artist’s exploration and interest in combining varying modes of 20th century abstraction with the decorative arts, folk art, psychedelic art, and thrift store painting.
Anne Eastman’s videos “Post-It Notes” and “Snow-Globe” attempt to transform those commercial products into perceptual experiences through low-tech means. The videos allow these objects to oscillate between the promise of beauty and the reality of their lowly commercial function. A similar optical play is offered by her piece “Let Go of Your Ego”, a mirrored mobile that can be viewed as both object and reflected space, which, in this case, includes the exhibition itself.
Benjamin Butler was born in 1975. He received his BFA from Emporia State University in 1997 and his MFA in Painting from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2000. He has had solo exhibitions at Tomio Koyama Gallery (Tokyo), Karyn Lovegrove Gallery (Los Angeles), Galerie Zink (Berlin), Lora Reynolds Gallery (Austin), Greener Pastures Gallery (Toronto), Galerie Lisa Ruyter (Vienna), Groeflin Maag Galerie (Basel), and Team Gallery (NYC). His work has also been exhibited in numerous group shows including Greater New York at P.S.1 in 2005. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Anne Eastman was born in 1973. She received her BA in Cultural Anthropology from Smith College in 1997 and her MFA in Sculpture from Yale School of Art in 2006. Her work has been shown at Groeflin Maag Galerie (Zurich), China Art Objects (LA), Kate MacGarry (London), PPOW (New York), and Daniel Reich Gallery (New York). This June she will have a solo exhibition with Groeflin Maag Galerie at LISTE ‘08: The Young Art Fair, in Basel, Switzerland. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
