Renwick Gallery is pleased to present the first NY shows for both Hansjoerg Dobliar and Claudia Wieser in Licht aus Berlin. The exhibition features painting, works on paper, and sculpture.
Licht aus Berlin refers to the title of a book written by the film critic Frieda Graefe. The book explores the films of three 20th century German-expressionist filmmakers who all later traveled to America to further develop their careers. Dobliar and Wieser use Modernist language as a starting point to begin to play light, shadow, and space. The exhibition space will become a reflection of mood and construction of atmosphere. Both artists aim to distort reality much in the way that of the revolutionary German Expressionist filmmakers. Wieser focuses on precise formal concerns while Dobliar uses speed and spontaneity built upon a hidden structure. Both artists construct an altered and suspended sense of space, referencing the geometric abstraction of light.
Hansjoerg Dobliar was born in 1970 in Ulm, Germany, and lives and works in Munich and Berlin. His work is currently on view in “Rom Report” at Badischer Kunstverein, Karslruhe, and in “What kind of painting?” at Spueth Magers Projekte, Munich. Previous exhibitions include “SurferRosa” at Daniel Hug Gallery in Los Angeles, “The Delicate Deformation” at Galerie Ben Kaufmann in Munich, “The Diamond Sea” at the Kunstverein Ulm, and “Perspektive 07” at the Lenbachhaus Munich.
Claudia Wieser was born in 1973 in Freilassing, Germany. Her work is currently on view in “Past-Forward” curated by Vincent Honore at Project Space 176, and “In the Shadows” at the Kunstverein Wolfsburg. Wieser will have a solo show in October with Galerie Ben Kaufmann. Past exhibitions include “Angle of View” at Eva Winkeler in Frankfurt, and “In der Geometrie gibt es keine Sekten,” at Elizabeth Kaufmann in Zurich.
