Rinko Kawauchi’s New York debut exhibition includes photographs from Aila (Little More, 2004) and the eyes, the ears (Foil, 2005).
Kawauchi (born 1972) won Japan’s Kimura Ihei Award in 2002 for Utatane, Hanabi, and Hanaku (Little More, 2001), her first three books of photographs.
In the back gallery will be 15 prints from the eyes, the ears, in which a series of somber images is juxtaposed with short poems written by the artist. In contrast to Aila, these photographs have the feel of snapshots, or visual notations of daily life that characterized Kawauchi’s first works in Utatane.
Rinko Kawauchi’s work is also currently on view in a solo exhibition at the Fondation Cartier in Paris and will travel to the Huis Marseille, Amsterdam in September 2005. In May 2006 she will be the subject of a solo show at The Photographer’s Gallery in London.
In 2004 Rinko Kawauchi had solo shows at the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles and the California Museum of Photography. She was also featured on the cover of the Winter 2004 issue of Aperture magazine.
