The Architecture of Emotion: Interior and Exterior

Initial Intake
247 East 82nd Street, 3rd floor, 646-422-0544
Upper East Side
June 11 - July 31, 2008
Reception: Saturday, June 14, 5 - 7 PM

This exhibition, which coincides with the roundtable Emotion and Invention in Architecture, examines the link between human psychology and the spaces—interior and exterior, public and private—where we live out the many facets of daily life. The intellectual and emotional intent of the architect determines not only how a space is used, but also how it feels to exist in that space. The way a building interacts with its natural environs can reflect and inform the way its occupants feel about the surrounding landscape, and even influence their internal, psychic landscapes. The visual conceptualizations of architect Julio Salcedo reflect an interest in exploring how buildings appeal to the senses while at the same time facilitating the functional human commerce that takes place within them. Digital representations of Vito Acconci’s architectural creations underscore the potential for fusing fantasy, playfulness, and utility in shaping public spaces. Saul Robbins’s Initial Intake, a series of photographic portraits of psychotherapists’ chairs, addresses how interior spaces devoted to healing can function as containers for the exploration of human memory and emotion.

Exhibition curated by Hallie Cohen, Chair, Art Department, Marymount Manhattan College.
