Little Mermaids is a selection of recent works by Ginna Triplett of works on paper and paper mounted on canvas. Triplett creates seductively nice paintings that play with our collective standards of femininity. By playing the dutiful role as hostess, Triplett gathers imagery from “men’s” magazines, Victoria’s Secret catalogs, 70’s TV icons, nursery rhythms, wedding cakes, and just about every Disney character created. Then with a matter-of-fact delicate black line she cajoles the images to freely associate, merge, collide, crash, and mix and mingle into an estranged and borderless re-casting of femininity.

The artist says of her paintings: “As I negotiate my daily existence as an artist and mother of young children, I find that these soft-porn pin-ups, glamorous fashion models, and cartoons of pristine princesses and sweet, cuddly juvenile animals – mock my reality. I am compelled to seize them for my own, alter them, and transform them into mutants and deviants.”
