The feeling of summer is one in which a certain lightness of spirit is conjoined with the transitive passing of time. Though we may still have a job, a family, and many of the other concerns which fill up a specifically urbamn existence, there are moments when we are returned to the carefree days of our youth, when the manic focus of adult perspective is tempoarily replaced by an amorphous sense of wonder. Such moments of contemplation are not to be comfused with idleness, or they perform a valuable function: the freeing of the mind from brute responsibility. They can be gestated in a simple event, such as a piece of newspaper being thrown up in the air and tossed back down again, a cool breeze travelling down the avenue, or a smell or color that reels us back into the distant past. These artists help us to celebrate summer’s autonomous sense of respite.
