In THIS AND THAT, Denise Kupferschmidt uses the format of the storefront space on Tenth Avenue (formerly the Kantor/Feuer window) to conjure memories of a display case she grew up with that housed souvenirs of her Great Aunt’s time as a missionary in Mozambique alongside trinkets and ephemera related to her grandfather’s devotion to the Methodist Ministry. Kupferschmidt’s new sculptures address the juxtaposition of cultures and aesthetics which has long been a source of inspiration to the artist. While the installation is not a replication of her grandmother’s cabinet itself with its curious contents, it strongly harkens that memory and its museum-like presentation.
