The Art School was started in 1895 to provide art enrichment to young immigrants and neighborhood adolescents and adults. It soon became known for its quality program attracting people from all over the city. Among the artists who studied or taught here are Louise Nevelson, Adolph Gottlieb, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Jules Olitski, Leonard Baskin, and Ben Shahn. In 1940 The Alliance held its first exhibit of teachers and alumni. The artists in that exhibit included: Peter Blume, Jacob Epstein, Chaim Gross, Louis Lozowick, Iver Rose, and Moses Soyer.
