An exhibition of photographs by the Belgian designer Maarten Van Severen (1956-2005). Dimensions was originally created for the De Coker Gallery in Gent, Belgium, where Van Severen was asked to make an exhibition that did not include his design work, but instead the ideas and inspiration that informed their creation. These photographs reflect the creative vision that fueled Van Severen’s designs.

The Storefront exhibition also features the film Maarten van Severen: Work (directed by Terenja Van Dijk, 2005), produced in conjunction with a major retrospective of Van Severen’s work at the Design Museum Gent.

Van Severen created a body of work that reflected his quest for perfection in form, detail and execution. In addition to the highly crafted work he originally produced in his studio in Gent, he also collaborated with important furniture manufacturers such as Vitra, Kartell, Edra, Alessi and Pastoe.

Van Severen collaborated with Rem Koolhaas/OMA, creating furniture and interior elements for the Villa dall’ Ava in Paris and the Masion a Bordeaux, as well as the new Seattle Public Library and Casa da Musica, Porto. Other projects by Maarten Van Severen Studio include the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven (Netherlands) where he created a new library, bookshop, auditorium and restaurant; and a kitchen pavilion near Gent.

This exhibition is curated by Moniek E. Bucquoye for the Design Museum Gent, Flanders, Belgium and Johan De Coker from the De Coker Gallery, Gent, Belgium.

A limited edition catalog, For My Eyes Only, published in conjunction with the De Coker exhibition, will be available at Storefront, as well as the new book Maarten van Severen: Work, published on the occasion of the exhibition at the Design Museum Gent.
