Alchemy examines the ways in which artists use discarded or everyday objects to promote environmental awareness and investigate human relationships with nature. Some of the artists in this exhibition harvest materials from the street, refashioning them into new objects, often in the form of plants, flowers, or people. Others use traditional media to examine human relationships and people’s imprint on the environment. These practices echo the current historical position of Gowanus as a burgeoning artistic community with roots in industry, while engaging with broader global issues.
Guest Curator Jennifer Field – Curatorial Assistant at the Museum of Modern Art, NY
