Small A Projects is delighted to present Bob Linder, No Ice Cream Sound. The exhibition includes large-scale sculptures/paintings on mirror, graphite drawings of record covers and concrete objects that investigate the legacy and theatre of Minimalist sculpture while utilizing a formal vocabulary and titular language influenced by dub, roots and dancehall as well as post-punk, experimental and noise music. Linder’s incongruent source material makes evident an interior monologue as ideas about color, content and form are divorced from one context and repurposed into new relationships and forms.

Using commercially available materials including large panes of mirror, enamel paint and concrete, Linder’s work has an insistent physicality. Negating or fracturing reflections of movement both inside the gallery and on the street suggest ways in which the work is inclusive or continuous with a world beyond the gallery. At other times, the work appears to aspire to a pure formalism while trapping the viewer in a beautifully obliterated present tense.

Linder’s No Ice Cream Sound is both intuitive and deliberate and the resulting works are less demonstrations of his ideas as they are products of actions, both performative and painterly. The surfaces of the work flirt with both grit and elegance; and an atmosphere of decay is pervasive. The processes of fabrication seem fraught with deterioration and destruction. Collateral damage is apparent in both the realms of the semiotic and the material, but the effect is also liberating. Linder’s works are humble and irreverent gestures of a poetic and radical uprising.

Bob Linder has exhibited his work at Small A Projects, Portland, OR; Galleri Nicolai Wallner, Copenhagen; and Jack Hanley, San Francisco. His work has been included in group exhibitions at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and White Columns. In alternate circles, Linder sings in a post-punk hardcore band, Total Shutdown. This is his first solo exhibition in New York.
