EROS \noun 1: the ancient Greek god of love, son of Aphrodite; identified by the Romans as Cupid 2: physical love; sexual yearning or desire 3: sexual drive, libido; the sum of all instincts for self-preservation and sexual pleasure

Richard L. Feigen & Co.’s fall exhibition, Eros, will focus on the themes of love, romance, and eroticism, which have fascinated artists for centuries. Paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, and video art from the 16th century to the present will give a glimpse of the multiple explorations of passion and lust and infinite incarnations of Eros—from 16th century role reversals to 20th century gender bending.

The exhibition will include drawings by the 19th century French artist Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson from his celebrated Loves of the Gods series; Bathers in a Park, by Pierre Bonnard; a surreal nude by Paul Delvaux; a watercolor by Schiele; coy “Cupid” collages by Ray Johnson; a “Bedroom” picture by Tom Wesselmann; an engaging late sculpture by Louise Bourgeois; a video from Bill Viola’s Passions series; and an 18th century watercolor from Jaipur. The exhibition will also include works by Nosadella, Mastelletta, Greuze, Moench, Rops, Bellmer, Grosz, Beckmann, Ernst, and Picasso.
