Sun K. Kwak’s signature medium of expression masking tape drawings, are meditative studies of the surrounding environment, a dialog between the spiritual and natural forces that we struggle to reconcile culture-wide. On the surface, the installations are beautiful melodic drawings containing rhythms and momentum resembling improvisational works of art. Yet, recalling the psychic convolutions of surrealist automatism, each work is a reaction to the environment’s qi (life force). Tapping into the architecture’s history and former dwellers, Ms. Kwak provides a visual clue into the hidden yet apparent energy within each space.
