Hot off a first place win at the Silvermine’s Art of the Northeast in Connecticut and a critically acclaimed exhibit at Evos Art Center in Massachusetts, young sculptor Mark Andreas makes his New York debut at Dam, Stuhltrager Gallery with Seed Spreader.

In Andreas’ sculpture, “Seed Spreader,” hundreds of pounds of welded and forged steel are unpredictably triggered into frenzied motion by the decomposition of a single twig. The towering “Seed Spreader,” weighing in at more than 400 pounds, is wound and activated to jump up in the air, spin three foot blades and shoot Scott’s Pure Premium High Performance Grass Seeds which will grow in the gallery.

Characteristic of Andreas’ “reactive sculptures,” “Seed Spreader” is hand-wound and stimulated into dramatic, blunt and powerful movements by natural forces. Implicitly dangerous, Andreas will choreograph his massive, metal contraptions into spontaneous performances opening night. Environmental decay, dipping temperature and change in state of matter are each an autocatalysis, setting Andreas sculptures into a frenzy. Over the six-week exhibit, video documenting the sculpture’s assembly and performance will accompany a time-lapse camera capturing the grass as it grows.
