For Shivani Dugar, Nature is sacred. and she looks to create a sacred space in each of her works, a space that can be entered into by the viewer. Nature is moody and changing, alternately pitiless, without mercy and yet embracing and comforting in turn. With the current body of works titled Remembrance, Shivani Dugar continues to explore the natural world, both seen and unseen, shifting and changing before and around us. For this exhibition, the artist has specifically worked on larger canvases, exploring these ideas through abstractions that sometimes border on representation, constantly evolving her technique and mastery of color and all its many tonal variations. Like the masters before her who constantly influence her art practice, Shivani’s journey is a personal journey into the spirit of nature. It is a journey of reminiscence, where the spirituality of nature is expressed not only in the elements but in their relationships and connections, where light animates the landscape as much as it animates the mind, uncovering hidden elements and meanings. Like nature, her paintings are built up in layers of texture and color, much as nature and, by extent ourselves, is built upon layer and layer of time, experience and memory. The contemplation of cosmic cycles of rebirth, generation and dissolution, of air, fire, earth, water and space, are all examined using the tools of color and mark making as vehicles to open our eyes to the magnitude of the natural world.
