Capricious Space is proud to present boo boo, an installation by artist Anne Hall. boo boo marks Hall’s first solo foray into installation. Upon entering the gallery, one will be struck by the almost religious quality of the space and an uncertainty as to whether we have entered a place of communing, sacrifice, or exorcism. The “artifacts” and “altars” initiate a series of posthumous discourses between a seemingly absent entity and a psychotic. Materials included in the exhibition include tree branches, horsehair, glass, and light, with the exception of the central sculpture that consists of discarded furniture found near or in Hall’s cabin in New Hampshire and tumbling mats bought on craigslist.
In conjunction with the opening of Hall’s exhibition, Capricious Publishing will celebrate the launch of The Known World, a book documenting a moment in time that was an experience shared by Anne Hall and Sophie Mörner. Together the installation and book pair artifacts and athletics, mirages and collisions. “For three months or so, Anne and I escaped the city, as much as we possibly could, and found the forest wrapping around us,” says Mörner. The women traveled from New Hampshire to the Catskills, to the woods of northern Florida, and back again.
The images and texts included in The Known World are candid relics, remembrances and reimagined fantasies of the magic that occurred during the months Hall and Mörner spent together. The book shows and tells a story, a tale of the wilderness, a visual history of freed hearts, without judgment on hurts and regrets and misunderstandings. Though it was not conceived as a challenging or political piece, The Known World is a “potentially seminal work” in the realm of contemporary lesbian and feminist art and documentation, according to Jessica Gysel (Editor of GLU Magazine).
About Anne Hall Anne Hall’s upcoming shows in New York include an installation at Momenta Art (with the Society for the Advancement of Inflammatory Consciousness) and a residency at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council swing space, both in 2009.
