Alex Serna, Signs of Manhattan

Serna’s Signs of Manhattan series is inspired by the Indian symbols for Manhattan Island: the sun, the turtle, the canoe, and the totem. With these “marks” as a starting point, Serna created current day symbols for the city using fire escapes, iron building facades and light poles. The works include transfer on paper of architectural elements juxtaposed with abstract splashes of color.

Serna lives in Madrid, Spain. His works shown at PSCA are based on a residency he undertook in the spring of 2001 when he visited New York for several weeks and made artworks inspired by TriBeCa and Chinatown. He has been included in group shows at PSCA in 2002 and 2003.
