A few years back the artist, Patrick Cunningham, handed me a photo album he’d found lying curbside somewhere in the Lower East Side. He knew I had a soft spot for “found photography” and figured I’d appreciate the anonymous trove. It’s the chronicle of a gay male couple’s relationship over a period of years. Oddly, this carefully constructed record of a relationship was simply abandoned on a street in the Lower East Side.

Even odder is the fact that not one of the 100 or so photographs portray both men in the same snapshot at the same time. It’s either one or the other, but they never appear alongside each other in any of the photos.

The exhibition will include the actual album alongside a collection of work in a variety of media that reference its surrounding themes of duality, isolation and togetherness.
