Stephan Baumkötter’s drawings cross the boundaries of conventionalist structures, as they are absent of linear focus and abandon all classical definitions of drawing. Baumkötter strives towards visibility and significance versus classification and genre, which is why his drawings lack titles or any relationship to verbal speech.
Stephan Baumkötter resides in Cologne, and his works have been displayed at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas, the Rupert Walser Gallery in Munich, the Bonn Museum of Art, and the Nordenhake Gallery in Stockholm. Stephan Baumkötter comes to the Goethe-Institut after a residency at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation.
New Works will travel back to Germany and will be presented at the Museum Quadrat in Bottrop after this exhibition. A bilingual catalogue accompanies Baumkötter’s exhibition, thanks to support from the Foundation for the Arts and Culture in Düsseldorf.
