Higher Pictures presents For The Love Of God, the first New York solo exhibition by photographer Carl de Keyzer. The exhibition will consist of vintage photographs from God, Inc., a series of work produced between 1990-1992.
Reacting to the Gulf War in 1990, Belgian artist Carl de Keyzer traveled to the United States to document the incestuous relationship between government and religion. Camouflaged in a rented Winnebago, de Keyzer traveled through America photographing a range of Christian organizations, from Mormons staging Bible story pageants in rural upstate New York to the “Sons of God” religious motorcyclists at Bike Week in Daytona Beach.
With a mixture of hope and violence these works bring into focus human beings acting out their spiritual desires and longings. Without being dismissive or sardonic, de Keyzer documents a ‘real’ and non-commodifiable devotion to the organics of faith. De Keyzer’s art reveals a variety of expressions to religious passions played out in a mesmerizing and highly theatrical manner. The photographs examine the drastically different and often extreme ways in which people communicate with God.
