Referencing the mechanics of collage, Separate Entities presents artworks fabricated from complete singular elements. Whilst these combinations result in an autonomous work, the discrete elements still maintain their individual properties. The artists in the show use varying methods that include assembling groups of objects, following particular steps or tasks, going through multiple processes to create one work amongst others. For example,
Andy Cross produces large paintings that use other, smaller paintings as their base and Sarah Braman constructs sculptures that involve materials brought together with minimal intervention. The show demonstrates the concept beyond material concerns, allowing for the inclusion of collaborations and exterior projects within the theme. Matt Keegan and Amy Granat collaborate on a series of photographs and a 16 mm film, while Keegan also participates in the exhibition with solo works. Tamar Halpern has produced a series of posters that will be installed around the neighborhood. The work is separated from the gallery so it can be seen by a wider audience, but also to become immersed amongst advertisements and the visual clutter of the city. The exhibition will also include painting, sculpture and performances by Jacob Robichaux.
The exhibition was co-curated with Natalia Mager Sacasa. Sarah Braman is one of the founders of CANADA Gallery, NY, and has exhibited at Dicksmith Gallery, London, the ICA, Philadelphia and most recently with Joel Shapiro at Andrea Rosen Gallery. Her 2008 exhibition with Museum 52 was reviewed in Art Forum, Flash Art and Art in America Andy Cross has exhibited in New York and Boston. His work is included in the The Maramotti Collection, Italy and the Rubell Collection, Miami.
