Insurance is Not Always Insured Insurance Is Not Always Assured brings together a group of artists who address the conflicts implicit in the use of contemporary spaces for private, ritual, and creative means. Each of these artists explores the notion that stability in the external world is a myth. With this in mind, their various projects in video, photography and sculpture reference a wealth of celebrated forms from a distant past while commenting on the marginalized spaces and materials distinct to the cities in which they live, work and travel. These works set forth the principle that manmade forms are in a constant state of collapse and renewal: Grinnan’s flat sculptures, situated in the windows of the space, layer and compress photographic ruins and built space with the surrounding space of the city; Dela’s sparkly tinsel diamond sculptures appropriate archetypal forms she finds at car dealerships; and John Williams’ whirling sound and light projections employ turntables and slide projectors to induce a mind-altering experience of over stimulation. Other highlights include a claustrophobic and humorous video survey of a small, dark basement apartment by Thomas Doran and lavishly baroque sculptures frozen in acts of self-consumption by Emily Thompson.
