NURTUREart Non-Profit, Inc. is pleased to present Patterns Of Growth, a group exhibition curated by Susan Ross and Melissa Staiger, opening on Friday, February 20th at the NURTUREart Gallery at 910 Grand Street in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Featured artists include Laurie Close, Sarah Dobkin, Monique Ford, Phyllis Goldberg, Amy Kupferberg, Jackie Meier, Cynthia Milionis, Jeanne Thomsen, and Beatrice Wolert.

What do a celebrated eighty-year-old art-world veteran and a recent Pratt grad have in common? For one thing, gender. But more than that, according to curators Ross and Staiger, they are both part of an evolving tradition of abstract painters concerned with processes, or patterns, of growth. Spanning three generations of female artists, Patterns Of Growth attempts to trace a path of influence that began with pioneering artists like Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Alma Thomas, and continues in the work of contemporary artists. In different ways and to different ends, these women explore the personal, often mystical aspects of the creative process, while remaining grounded in the organic world. “I almost never work from nature,” said Francoise Gilot. “I want to work like nature, intuiting its process of harmonious growth, maturation, and generation.” Like Gilot, the artists in Patterns Of Growth create work inspired by natural cycles in which materials, space, and process are emphasized. As such, the exhibition is an aesthetic reflection on both the growth of individual processes and the growth of ideas across generations.

NURTUREart is proud to present this exhibition in conjunction with Women’s History Month this March.
