April 30, 2005 marked the 30th anniversary of the unconditional surrendering of the South Vietnamese to the communist North. The artists selected for this show share the common Vietnamese surname, Nguyen (pronounced “win”), and were asked to produce work on April 30 that reflected on that day.

With surprisingly little coverage of the anniversary in the media, perhaps due to the delightful parallels to Iraq, Eleven Nguyens and the Thirty-Year Loss presents the work of 11 contemporary artists whose relationship to the Vietnamese-American conflict comes from a historical and immediate perspective. The artists in the show span those who lived through the war, to those too young and distant to remember first-hand.
